How to Prepare Your Vehicle Before the MOT Test?

0

MOT is a test that assesses the roadworthiness of the vehicle. It is a test that around 20%-30% of vehicles fail due to some common reasons. Failure in the MOT Bradford test can be prevented provided that your vehicle is given proper care and maintenance before the due date for the test comes.

How to Know When your Vehicle’s MOT is Due?

To find out the due date of your vehicle’s MOT, you can refer to the previous year’s MOT certificate. MOT is a test that is done on the vehicle each year once it crosses three years of age. It is compulsory for all vehicles to undergo this test as your vehicle. Without clearing this test and having the MOT pass certificate, your vehicle is not considered legal to be driving on the roads.

MOT evaluates different parts of your vehicle. However, it does not include the testing of all parts of the vehicle. It is essential to keep all parts in good working condition since all parts are interconnected impacting the overall performance of the vehicle.

When your vehicle passes the MOT test, it is given an MOT clearance certificate. Clearing this test means that your vehicle meets the minimum working requirement and standards as defined by the government. MOT Bradford aligns with the safety and environmental standards and thus, clearing this test means that your vehicle is not a safety hazard.

The due date of your vehicle’s MOT can be found on the official website of the government. It is usually before the expiration date of your previous year’s MOT arrives. Make sure to register for the MOT test before the due date to avoid any consequences.

Preparing your Vehicle for the MOT

Before the MOT test, it is important to ensure that you run checks on different parts of the vehicle.

Here is the list of parts that are evaluated during the MOT.

Headlights and Indicator

Headlights, taillights, and indicator lights are checked during the MOT test. Faults in the lighting is a common MOT failure. Make sure that all the lights of the vehicle are working fine or are not fused or defective. Change all the fused bulbs before the MOT as you cannot clear the MOT test with the fused bulbs.

Braking System

The braking system is also inspected during the MOT Bradford test. If one or more brakes not working, or if the brake lights are not functioning correctly, then this also becomes a reason for the failure in the MOT. Brake lights are crucial as they impact the driver’s view and prevent road accidents. Also, the brakes should work properly, and the vehicle should respond well to the commands given by the brakes. There should be shorter stopping distances as longer stopping distances indicate the issues with the brakes.

Tyres and Wheels

Tyres are the most important vehicle parts that are thoroughly checked during the MOT. Ensure that there are no cuts, bulges, or cracks on the tyres. They should not show any sign of deterioration and should have sufficient tread depth. Tyres Bradford with a tread depth below 1.6mm are not legally allowed to be on the roads. Also, the wheels of the vehicle should be properly aligned and balanced. It is important that you do regular care and maintenance of your vehicle’s tyres. Maintaining tyres regularly helps improve tyre health, and increases their chances of clearing the MOT.

Windscreen and Wipers

The windscreen and its wipers are also checked during the MOT test. A cracked windscreen obstructs the driver’s view. Therefore, the windscreen should not have any cracks and should be properly cleaned before the MOT inspection. Wipers should not be broken and should work properly. Check the windscreen, wipers, and washers before you take your vehicle to the MOT test.

Horns and Registration Plates

Horns are not an important part of the safety of the vehicle. They inform others on the road about the presence of your vehicle. If your horn is not making enough noise it should reach the surrounding vehicles. Registration plates should be neat, and have visible characters. The lettering of the number plate should be in standard font with equal spacing so that it is easily visible to the surrounding vehicles.

Suspension and Steering

The suspension system should also work right as it helps in the overall stability of the vehicle. It should not show any signs of wear and tear or corrosion. The shock absorbers and springs should be in perfect condition. Steering should be perfectly aligned and in the centre. If the steering wheel is tilted, then this means there is a problem with wheel alignment. Steering pipes, hoses, and all other connected parts should be in perfect working condition. Both the suspension and steering go through testers in the MOT test, and have to perform well.

Besides the above, seats, seatbelts, emissions, doors, mirrors, fuel system, and overall bodywork of the vehicle are assessed during the MOT test.
